Victoria, Seychelles - Small Merchant Acceptance, A Path to Financial Inclusion
Hosted by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, with guest speakers from the Visa School of Public Policy, this interactive day-long training covered a forgotten path to financial inclusion: acceptance of digital payments by micro and small merchants, many of whom are often unbanked, and own the neighborhood ''mom and pop'' stores where underserved people live and shop. The training covered the demographics of small merchants and presented levels of acceptance, and infrastructure, economic and regulatory barriers to acceptance. In group work, participants had the opportunity to propose approaches to overcome barriers and realize the opportunity, and then discuss those in light of lessons learned from global experiences and research.
